From Palestine to America
from suburbs to city line
sad days/ good days
twisted sunshine
cloudy/ bright
blue skies rain white
ocean waves cap/ ignite —
the laughter holds somber
the ragged tan lines
that line and edge
the sands of summer
wild on the coast
wild on the shoreline.
Sand between footsteps
toes between Converse
shoes hot/ burning/ thirsty
our moods unpredictable—
boardwalk splinters attack
Wildwood walkers retract
us/ them/ everyone saw
the chase by drugged up
pimple-faced/ pinball-stalkers—
cursing/ shouting
terrorists! terrorists!
hate floating high as the sky
high high higher
like kites strung out and up
by violent handfuls.
My cousins flaunting/ flouting out loud
our righteous fight blazoned
on black tee shirts with yellow type—
PLO Free Palestine!
Palestine Liberation Organization
1979
not loved by those high whites
who lunged and attacked
in a drunken-footed
hot chase/ we fight, we flee
we free!
