Edgar and Vincent
This is poetry I wrote about Edgar Allan Poe and Vincent Van Gogh, two of my favorite artists. I posted it originally on my instagram page. Hope you enjoy! Poetry about my beloved grandmother, Tetah.
Tateh ( grandmother ) and CeDe ( grandfather) circa 1937
Someone recently visited this poem I wrote back in 2012, about my feelings of missing my Tetah. It was a treat to revisit her again, thank you @Luisa Zambrotta
Our Storyteller
Upon the landscape of your face
tumbling from the folds of your laughing brow
and between the creases of your weathered jowl
I see the history of Palestine.
I see children playing under olive trees, and goats
grazing on grass. Your eyes sparkle and sing, as though
you were still a child running through the dusty
rock strewn roads of Ramallah.
You are laughing with your little sister, escaping
from the neighborhood boys you were teasing; taunting.
Perhaps one of them a young Hanna Shihadeh, our grandfather;
at least these are the stories you told us.
I delighted, relished every word you spoke
of your life. I saw magic in your eyes
when you enchanted our hearts
with your stories of Palestine.
You – solid, sturdy and present.
You – soft, strong and pliant.
You – heart, song and pleasant.
You – Tateh, our beloved link to our history, our culture, our people.
You were our land, our fig tree, our grapevine, our seed.
You were our small patch of fertile earth. You fed our souls
and minds with the world, with “otherworldliness”.
You fed our spirits with story, with beauty, and with freedom.
Your solid girth seemed rooted
deep in humanity, reminding us of
the vastness of love, when we became lost;
disconnected from it.
Storyteller of our bloodlines,
of our rich hearts
and our sad people,
tell me another story.
Give me a bone,
an olive branch, or perhaps
one of your two – eyed winks
to remind my soul you were real.
And that I am part of history; of an ancient great Palestine
that seems so distant, so foreign from me now.
Tell me again how you came to be locked in the landscape
of memory, of story, of history. Tell me again.

Tetah tending to her grapevine, with one of her many great grandchildren. She loved making fresh Dawali (stuffed grape leaves) from her beloved grapevine. She is missed and loved very much. Intenie Bosa!
Yum Food!! Yum Art!!
Here is a link to another poem I wrote about my memories with my grandparents, enjoy!

Honestly, I Think Not
honesty is bullshit
it takes sweat
it takes regret, stuffs it
up the, or down the
throat of those you claim to love
or, or, perhaps
those who hang around the fringes
pretending you matter.
i don’t know, it feels
like a sick kind of dichotomy
stetching the wretched confines
of the mind, the worst part of those deep deep recesses
dark dank and rarely visited.
virtuous nonsense, yes virtue
can exhibit signs of it, for sure
i think i’m preferring silence
peace, let’s keep it
sure, honesty keeps one
pure, judgmental, stark
actually
naked and hung out to flake away
into the creeping
regretful silence
that awaits, the chosen preference of the day.

Ode To Censorship
why should i
shut up
what i
believe is
wrong
i don’t want to
hurt you
but i must be
strong
in justice
not cower at
injustice
my pride
is in what’s
correct
i believe
the u.s.a.
is corrupt
breathing, living off
someone else’s
air, land and stolen
contraband
this united states
government
has created
many enemies
with their
thuggish
foreign policies
how long do
you believe
uncle sam
will understand
they are justified
in their
right to
concretize
their warring
plan
to conquer
every piece
of land
upon
this
earth
so grand
bleeding
wringing out
the souls
of cultures
ancient and
cosmopolitan
this land
this u.s. land
land stolen
not so long ago
the genocide
of native
american
man
woman
child
so blood thirsty
for the gold
too bold
in their arrogance
striking young, striking old
in defiance
of a peoples’
generosities
taking advantage
of their reciprocity
how long before
the end
of a system
built off these
atrocities
this war
this massacre
this seizing of land
will cause nothing
more than
a devastating plan
of self-destruction
and
a ‘quick flash in the pan’
of a people
too greedy
too backward
too
in-humanitarian
I see justice
on the horizon
beating a path
of victory
from years of
oppression
lighting the way
for democratic
expression
lost in the
onslaught of
criminal
repression
of culture’s
so vast
it’s beyond
comprehension
of
beautiful worlds
years ahead
of this time, this place
ahead of this race
to capture control
and bottle
the magic that
inhales and exhales with
unwavering grace
a peoples’ so strong
so rightful in place.

Did You Know I Could Stay Here All Day?
Did you know I could stay here all day?
writing and wasting away
words keep coming
releasing a gorge
an orgy of thumping dancing syllables surge
playing on my tongue, jumping in my head
begging to display.
I love this feeling, intensity and healing
pleasing my body with lusciousness reeling,
bleeding from my mouth to my page.
Did you know I could stay here all day?
penning and pining, bated breath reclining
waiting, for something to say.
it’s nighttime now, but time is out of place
when images are flying, bouncing from space
to grace this page alive,
with such disgrace
emboldened, completely burning away.
Did you know I could stay here all day?

Legs

Photo by Aleksejs Bergmanis from Pexels Legs
Legs burn muscle
over hills and byways
highways stretching on the horizon
teeming with cars
hell-bent on winning the race
the race of human want
want that crashes without brakes
still, I beat the road
pounding legs on shoe rubber lanes
racing the clock
to stay in the game
gridlock metal that knows
no shame
refusing to budge, I remain
leg-muscled-highway
drive through wind and rain
all steel and rubber
screeching in pain
the race of human want
futile gain.

Ravaged
That greedy glint
in the eye of the fooled
the eye of the lost
my heart left in the home of the tricked
What does it take for them to wake up?
To stop selling their fortunes
for the land of milk and honey
the land where the streets are paved in gold
the lies told to lure them
What will it take before the tales of fools
are replaced with the folklore of the ancient?
The contentment of the indigenous?
What will it take for the
Mad Hatter to end his greedy voyages
into the hearts of the innocent?
I am ravaged like the forests of the Amazon!
Ravaged like the tombs of Egypt!
And where do the tombs rest now?
In the land of the greedy, the violent
in the land of the weeping
I am the ravaged exile!
The ravaged land of the tricked
and the ravaged heart
of the fool.
